Paediatric First Aid (PFAW)

Paediatric First Aid

This nationally accredited Level 3 course has been developed for those who are working with children and infants. Particularly suitable for teachers, child minders, creche assistants, playgroup personnel and anyone who has responsibility for the welfare of children whilst in your care. The course satisfies the guidelines and criteria laid down by the Early Years Foundation Stage and OFSTED. Attendance on both days is mandatory in order to achieve the full award. A minimum contact time of 12 hours makes up the two days and consists of practical and theoretical components. A range of subjects is covered including:

  • Responsibilities and reporting
  • Assessment of the situation
  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
  • Infantile convulsions
  • Control of bleeding
  • Shock
  • Eye injuries
  • Sickle cell anaemia
  • Resuscitation
  • Head injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Foreign bodies
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Heat and cold emergencies
  • Fainting
  • Choking
  • Fractures
  • Meningitis
  • Burns
  • Asthma

Assessment is ongoing by continual assessment in respect of the student's practical skills, and a multiple choice question paper to confirm knowledge. Following successful completion of both elements a three year certificate will be issued. A maximum 12 students can be accommodated on this course. The minimum age is 14 years.
